on a 2000 honda civic ex does the valve cover have to say vtec for it to be a vtec engine?

Most of the time it will.. but all EX civics have vtec..

look for the tag that says it is engine type "D16Y8" that is the vtech engine in the 2000 civic ex. that year the ex models were the vtech engines!

im getting tired of saying this.. its VTEC not vtec or Vtech ok. yes it has to say VTEC on the valve cover and no the valve covers are not interchangable and yes you should have the power of a VTEC.. but you can always go LS/VTEC if you dont

AZN streetracer is wrong. The valve cover DOES NOT have to say VTEC for it to be a VTEC engine the 1999 and 2000 EX models don't say VTEC on the valvecovers. If the car is an EX model it has VTEC. look on the grey plastc piece beside the valvecover and it will say D16Y8 on a white tag. it says that its VTEC. If it says D16Y7 it's not. Another easy way to check is to see if your car has the tach in the instrument cluster, and a moonroof. These are only available on the EX model. Or just look in front of the distributor and see if there is a little round looking cylinder about 4 inches tall attached beside the valvecover on the left side. This is your VTEC solenoid. If its there its a VTEC.
