i bought my 2000 honda used certified car in 2002 only to discover a year later that the paint was chipping off. apparently, the vehicle had been in a collision and received a super crappy paint job that the inspectors at honda did not catch. the dealership paid for the repair. fastforward to today: i notice that the other side of the car (front passenger door) is rusting. i take it to a body shop (the same one i went to for the first repair: a great place) and they take the door off and discover that the door was clearly in a collision and was basically glued back together instead of actually replaced. because the work was so crappy, this has led to leaks in the door (now rusted) and even the door joint was involved in the original collision because it too was kind of haphazardly repaired. how do i get the dealer to pay for this? am i right that a door like this should never have passed the inspection and become certified? how do i prove this?

You are correct that the door like this should never have passed inspection but it depends on who is certifying the car, and what their list of specifications are, if it states in your contract that the entire car is under warranty, you may have a claim, But must consider the age of the car and how long the warranty is good for. When you purchase a used car, it is buyer be aware. Many reasons for people getting rid of their car and or trading in for a new. This car apparently was not viewed very well or just looked good. Was this a Honda certified car? I would avoid other car certified car lots other than the car maker dealers.

yes you are correct, this vehicle should of never been a certified used, but unfortunitly, not all dealerships have a no accident policy for their certified used vehicles, the person that inspects the vehicle has no real way of telling of internal dammage after a repair, gotta remember most auto techs are fairly young, most no older than 45, and yeah that might seem old.. but remeber auto programs are normaly a two year program and you are out in the work force by the time you are 20, and how many 20 yr olds do you know that can spot a repaired door on a car?. also i am pretty sure that the warintee on a certified used is 1 yr
