Default does aftermarket exhaust system waste gas.?

i have a 95 civic. i want to get an aftermarket exhaust system. possibly a catback. but i am hearing conflictin answers as if it consumes alot of gas. one of ma frnds said that after revamping his exhaust system he lost about 7 mpg. That to me is alot of miles. Some people say it helps gas milage and some say it doesnt. If anyone can shed a little insight, or tell me how their gas was afta gettin an exhaust i would b truly gratefull.

It will only waste gas if you car constantly giving it excessive gas because you like the sound. Not everyone is impressed by a Honda with a pipe. Usually if they have headersturbo carbon fiber hoodroll cageand an v6 with a 5 speedThey get more looks than a 4door with a pipe ever will

A free flowing exhaust system can only help fuel mileage. Your friend probably likes what he hears so he's got his foot on the throttle more.

no it increases pumping efficiencies. Thus increasing gas mileage and a little power. Your friend just drives harder know like he is a race car driver. After intake and exhaust i do about the same gas mileage if not better on my acura.

It wont waste any more or less gas, unless its poorly designed and restrictive, but if you buy a borla, or other top name brand, it may actually get a little better mpg, but you wouldnt really notice it.....it would also make a tiny bit more hp, but again, you are unlikely to fell it....so why would you want to put on an exhaust????Because it sounds like its going fast, do it, it sounds good.
