Default 98 Honda Accord Won't Start Sometimes?

I have a 1998 honda accord with about 145000 miles on it. Sometimes my car will not start for about 2 minutes. It will turn over but will not start and it cranks. Sometimes it even dies when i get it going. The thing is, is that it doen't do it all the time. It might not happen for a month but then it will happen 3-4 times a day. I took it to a honda shop but they say they can't fing anything wrong with it. Does anyone know what could be the problem with my car? Thanks!

Take it to a shop and have them do a 150k service. They might find something besides a bad timing belt or valve adj, and make sure they check all the sensors ( like you'll know if they do ).

It could be an electrical problem. They usually start out as intermittent and unfortunately are very difficult to find when the car is running fine. I would check the electrical wiring and connections for signs of corrosion, burning or melting. Corroded electrical contacts sometimes generate that can actually melt and burn the insulation off of wires.Another problem could be a failing fuel pump. To check find the gasoline bleeder screw (usually on top of the gas line connection to fuel filter) and loosen after a failed attempt to start the car. If the pump is working the pressure in the line will cause a small amount of gas to come out. A few words of caution - wear a pair of safety gargles, have a fire extinguisher handy and do not perform this indoors or near an open flame or sparks. Also in winter or under low humidity it becomes easier to generate sparks from static electricity. You also might try changing the fuel filter if it hasn't been replaced in awhile (a year or 2). Good Luck!

It sound like the fuel pump relay is bad. Usually on very hot days it won't start and cooler days starts right up. Honda Acura factory trained technician 3 yrs.

My 98 Accord (around 131,000 miles) started having similar problems about 2 weeks after I got it. The brake, door, trunk, and battery indicator lights were also coming on. I took it by a shop and they said it was rpobably some kind of sensor/electrical problem and to bring it back the next morning so they could check it out. That night, while I was driving to my mom's house, all of the indicator lights on the inside and my headlights strated going dim & my radio volume was going down. I'm still thinking it's electrical....it wouldn't even turn over when I tried to crank it again. My uncle ended up putting in a new alternator the next day and it's worked fine since then. Go figure!

My 98 Honda was working fine all the way up to the day of the storm "Hurricane Ike". I drove it all day long and it was running fine. I left in the driveway the day of the storm because the garage was full of yard stuff that could blow around and break glass. The day after the storm I went out to survey the neighborhood and the car wouldn't start. I pushed in the clutch turned the key in the ignition and heard only one click then nothing. All the lights on the dashboard came on and I heard the fan come on and the battery is only 5 months old. Any ideas help please!!! Don't have the money to put the car in the shop to find out what really wrong hoping it's something I can do my self. Since the storm left so much damage and allot of repairs to be done to the house I don't have the money to put the car in the shop. Any advise would be well appreciated Thanks!

I had the same problem and the answer to your problem is the MAIN RELAY

Read and understand the linked article....
Technical details Honda/Acura Main Relay

This will explain the symptons and the fix... Its easy if you know how to solder or you have somebody that can solder for you....

The article tells you the location of the RELAY on various years and models... On my 99 its to the left side of the steering column... The plug is a real bitch to get out no elbow room under the dash... Once you get the plug out... Slide a small blade screw driver between the base of the relay and the relay case... Loosen one side and it will drop out in your hand....

I soldered the connections as per the article instructions and have not had a problem since............

THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM... I went round and round with dealers and they all suck... Nobody gives you an answer or solution to the problem... There must be 20 post he on this forum alone regarding this starting problem... It really becomes predominate on HOT DAYS if your car has been sitting in the sun.... The bad solder joints on the relay expand and loose the conductivity to the circuit board..............

RICH KING
BEEN THERE DONE THAT.....................

I had the exact same problem where my 98 honda accord lx wouldn't start one day. It would crank and crank but wouldn't start. I never smelled any gas so I assumed it was a fuel delivery issue. After letting it sit for say 10-15 minutes, it would then crank and start up and running choppy at first but subsequently it ran fine. A few weeks later the same thing happened, with the same end result (it would turn over but not start, then 10 minutes later started and ran fine).

The schedule seemed random but I did notice that both days were abnormally hot and humid for the fall season, say 65-70 degrees. I read the posts on this forum and started with the least expensive option, changing the Main Relay. Instead of trying to solder it I just purchased a new one for about $50.

The car has started fine ever since, and its been over a month now.

I have a 1998 Honda Accord we got snow overnight and possibly some rain. It will not even attempt to start; no stalling - no nothing. The battery is fine but nothing when I try to start it. It has 138,000 miles on it and was fine just the other day. I also smelled a burning rubber smell faintly when attempting to start it. Any suggestions???
