Two days ago, I noticed a noise that seemed to come from the motor. It sounded like a "distant motorcycle hum" (best description I can think of); however, you wouldn't hear it unless you were paying attention. It started when I got my car to 40+ m.p.h. and stopped when I slowed down. Over the past two days, it has become slightly worse; just enough to where it's annoying now and happens almost all the time when I drive, regardless of speed. However, if I rev up the engine in Park, the noise doesn't happen. I took it to my uncle, who's a mechanic, and he says its most likely a wheel bearing. He drove it and heard the noise, but he said it wasn't "far gone" enough to figure out what side it was coming from. I had an 85-mile trip to make today, and when I returned, I could tell that it was definately coming from the driver's side. What do I need to do in the meantime? I have a short trip (~20 miles) to make tomorrow; is that going to be safe? They're getting replaced ASAP.

yea its safe, just take it easy on acceleration, sounds like a bearing from the cooling fan, maybe it happens more often since the a/c has been running, just get it fixed when you can, but untill then, i doubt that the car will break down

Yes replace the wheel bearing A.S.A. P. Check both sides, have your mechanic check the rear wheel bearings also. This is a pressed unit, so when you remove the hub take it to a machine shop and have them press it off, then the new one on. That is the best advice I can give you.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. A shop can easily tell you if it is bad and what side is bad. They should put it on a lift and with the car in drive listen to the bearings. You can do a quick test by driving the car about 25 mph and turn left and right (like weaving in and out of traffic). do this on a back road with no other cars and good visibility of on-coming traffic. If you here it more when turning right = left front wheel bearing, left = right front. If it is in the rear it may be harder to tell this way. Should be ok to drive short distances but get it fixed SOON.
