The whole purpose of the "break in" period of an engine is to get all the components seated properly, lubricated and in working order. It allows that engine parts to warm up and cool down under normal operating conditions and run at a rather easy pace, sealing any minute gaps in the gaskets.I have owned several cars that have needed a break in period. Even when I drove the engines harder than what was recommended, I had no troubles, but I was advised that by doing that, you increase wear and tear on your engine, would would mean that you might need some repairs sooner than you would normally.

Rings may not fully seat.. So you end up with an engine that uses oil and/or smokes. You put more wear on the bearings... Really you put more wear on the whole engine. Driving the car hard tends to run the oil and water temps higher.. In the 1st 1,000 miles this aint good at all.. Things like leaking head gaskets, cracks forming in the block or head, etc could happen..

I had a 2006 honda civic sedan and I had pushed the engine too hard and getting poorer gas milage and the engine sounding a bit funny after that.also avoidhard brakinghard turningdrive smoothlyhard accerlerationand most of all wear and tearIf you drive you new car smoothly and safely then your car could last forever.

That's in the break in period. Probably nothing will happen but you do run a risk of damaging your engine. Your valve seals, piston rings, and bearings might not seat properly. Todays engines are built to much higher tolerances than older cars were. Still engines and cars are expensive and I wouldn't risk it.

It will have very little effect on the engine. Perhaps you might shorten it's life from 400,000 miles to 380,000 miles. Just push it the last 20,000 miles and you'll be fine.
