Default Why is my 2007 Civic Lx getting bad mileage?

As advertised im supposed to get 30/40 mpg city/hwy respectively...and i do a lil bit of both city and hwy yet im not even close to what im supposed to get...i was getting 23-25 mpg and i am VERY frustrated with Honda...just purchased it about 4 months ago...i love the car but the mileage is not even close!any ideas why?Not sure what size engine i have...i have the default one i guess? lol im not a car whiz but yea i have the standard one i guess?uhm id say im a pretty safe driver and drive within speed limits maybe the occasional accelerate quickly on hwy but i usually never pass 5k rpm markthe car only has about 2500 miles so far....and i use regular fuel just as they directed me to use...i make the mpg calculations myself...how many gallons i put versus how many miles i drivei do agree all these make a difference in my mpg rating but is it supposed to be this drastic? 23 to 30/40?

If your vehicle is that new you should definitely take it to a dealership or trusted mechanic to check the problem. The computers in cars today can now tell any kind of problem but your best bet is to take the car to a dealership because they will have the tools to analyze and fix it properly.

if it is new and you have no mods it may be the gas you use. depending on the area of the country you life gas companies use additives based on the city and state regulations. also how do you drive on or off the gas hills so forth. don't forget about altitude, polution and humidity these all effect MPGs

It might be because the odometer was resently reset and then it only averages your mileage since then and you've been in town.

More details would help. What size engine do you have? Transmission auto/ or manual. any modifications? driving habits also play a large role. do you accelerate quickly and break hard? do you drive the speed limit? how many miles do you have on you car? what octane rating and brand of fuel do you use?

I've driven Hondas of all kinds for years and years. I always got the advertised mileage, if not better. You probably need a tune up, and check the pressure in your tires. Both things can dramatically impact gas mileage. Your driving habits also matter. For optimum mileage, you have to drive 50-55 mph on the highway, and avoid hard starts and stops. I don't know if you bought your car from a Honda dealer, but even if you didn't, I'd recommend taking it for the tune up to a dealer. It might cost a little more, but they're specifically trained to service your car. If later on, you want to take the car to cheaper, non-honda dealers, that might be ok. But for this problem, I recommend a dealer. Good luck - I hope you can find the problem. Hondas are great cars.

i feel i have answered this question in the past..... your car is new, it needs to learn your driving styles , and yes cars learn these days, also the vehicle could need an idle re learn. your car is not yet broken in, so your milage is going to be less than specified untill after the break in period... my personal car just started to get 32mpg hwy and it is an 02 with 120k. now i am in no way shape or form saying that it is going to take you that long to get the milage you had hoped, but it is going to take some time at least 7500 miles (second/third oil change depending) you could also be getting cheap or high alcohol content gasoline depending on where you are located. check your owners manual... make sure you are putting in the correct fuel grade for your area... remember higher octane isn't always better. if you are still unsatisfied with the milage take it in to your dealer where you purchaced it, tell them what you are telling us, keep notes on fill ups the amount you put in, milage and so on the more information you give them the better. also you have a 1.8 l ivtec

the way you drive can affect your gas mileage. it is summer, so im sure you are using the air conditioner as well, which can also have an effect on fuel consumption. plus, with only 2500 miles on your car, you are still breaking the car in. it may take time for the motor to adjust.

my wife has an 06 and drives mostly city and lots of hills - the result is about 25mpg. you should allow a break-in period to realize your optimal mpg, or you could be driving with a heavy foot. when i drove it on freeway only, i got between 30-32, and i drive pretty hard.
