what tools do i need to remove the steering wheel and lock plate?

You would need a steering wheel remover kit and a lock plate removing tool. You can find these at most auto parts stores. Just make sure the airbag is disabled before you start. To do that, you need to unplug it, it is located in the steering column. Disconnecting the battery cable is not sufficient and could be dangerous and costly if the airbag deploys while you're working on it. BTW All women should know how to perform at least the basics of being a "grease monkey" I find it as enjoyable as my gardening and having fun with my grandchildren.

Steering wheel puller and lock plate removal tool from Parts store. Disconnect the negative battery cable before you start to disable the air bag(s)
