Default Automatic Transmission?

Automatic shifting? I was wondering that when you are driving an automatic car is iit bad to just shift it from d4 to like d3 w/o stoppin completey and not step on the brakes? I ask this because alot of my friends tells me im going to mess up the cars transmission.

You should either slow enough to put it in d3 or step on the brake first, if you do this at high speeds then you can damage the transmission

It will not ruin the transmission, duce is completely wrong. It is bad to upshift manually with an auto. Think of it this way, what happens when you slam the gas? It down shifts. My father does this everyday on his 1998 dodge ram and has 160000 on his original transmission, and it saves the front brakes. it will not harm the transmission in any way. Good luck!

no harm will be done but why are down shifting if your not brakeing? d3 give you more brakeing than the other gears

Look at it this way... why are you doing it? If like for Jr.'s comment that his dad has done it and still going 160K.. great.... a brake job is $90, a transmission job is $1000. Which do you want to wear out first?
