Get a Honda CRX or Civic hatchback. If it is a CRX, go 90 or 91. Find an HF and you'll get 48-52mpg. A Civic hatchback or coupe would be okay. Those will get around 35mpg. A DelSol would be okay too, but very little room for storage. The CRX is a 2 seater, but the back is open, so you can fit a lot of stuff in there! It handles amazing. You can always go for the Si which is pretty zippy.

Say Whattt? (to all the other answers) I drive a 2000 honda accord and it is the most popular car at my high school. (99% rich preppy kids - in case you were wondering) What matters is details. Its flawless. About $50 in detailing stuff and you'll be good. Its a very safe car and when used manually (its an automatic, but can be shifted manually) can really get on it. Take a look at 'em.
