I will try to help I do not know what Year or Model Honda You have so I will try to explain as best I can.On all Honda's there is either a 4 speed or 5 Speed Automatic which means you have either 4 or 5 forward gears on your car. The more gears means the less RPMs you have at sustained higher speeds which translates into lower gas consumption. Most Model from 2006 on had 5 forward gears.D3 means that you have asked your car to ignore any gear beyond 3rd and increase the duration of gear for #s 1-3 giving you more torque (pulling power) and a higher RPM between gears. This is particularly helpful when you are either climbing or descending very steep hills as it eliminates the lag between gears when you have gravity fighting you on the way up and it helps to have the engine assist you in breaking on the way down. For most everyday driving you should be in D as you will get the most efficiency from your Automatic and save the most gas as you will have the proper gear for the conditions you are currently in.Hope this helps. You can contact me directly if you need more answers.

D3 is a fuction on automatics. When your in D3, your car will only go to 3rd gear, and wont go any further.D is "drive" and it just shifts regularly, around 2500RPM, unless you floor it. So D is more like the normal gear.So it kind of acts like a manual transmission, except without the clutch.

Think of D3 as having a 3 speed automatic - 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The car starts off in 1st and shifts normally through 2nd and 3rd. The torque converter may kick in at 3rd - causing RPM's to drop and resulting in some fuel savings. If you shift from D3 to D4 - the car shifts into 4th gear and the RPM's drop further - including when the Torque Converter kicks in.Now, come to a stop and shift into 2 - the car starts off in 2nd gear and stays in 2nd gear until any shift takes place. At stops, the car does not shift into 1st.Shft into 1 - the car starts off in 1st gear and stays in 1st gear. Use 1st only for extreme engine braking or extreme assistance with heavy loads because 1st isn't good past 30 MPH.
