I love my CRV, it's 2000 model, V4 engine. I've had it for almost four years and in that time have put 60,000 miles on it. Now I realize I drive A LOT, but I need better gas mileage. Currently I get about 21 mpg in the city, 24 highway. Can I hope for better?

You can do Better...For your CAR :1. Check your tires..They must be nearly perfect2. Check your air filter.. Allways use clean filters3. Allways use clean fuel ( Ask for the best )4. Motor oil must be perfectFor You DRIVER:1. Never do sudden acceleration.. Allways be calm2. Never push the acc. pedal fully..3. Never put extra things ( Accessories or somethings ) out of yur car. ( keep yur car's aerodynamics)4. If possible drive in night for long distances5. Don't open windows while driving.6. keep your car's speed ( not fast - not slow but at the same speed)7. gear lever is very important.. Allways keep it at the correct speed with correct position. ( if it is automatic forget it )8. If you drive fast then you meet wind resistance . Choose the best speed for your car.( not slow sure)9. Only your foot on acceleration pedal can save 10 % of yur fuel ( don't forget - think there is an egg under yur pedal- don't breake it ) good luck

I have the same vehicle, you can do a little better on it. Mine has no roof rack, this can effect mileage, tire pressure should be at 30psi, and make sue your alignment is good, pulling to the side will effect mileage. Gentle take off from a stop will help and high speeds on the freeway will reduce mileage. Running the A/C will consume more gas, make sure the plugs, wire, cap/rotor and air filter is good. Don't forget on that you have a cabin filter (nothing to do with mileage, just the air you breath) hidden away behind the glove box that will be filthy dirty if it is the original.

Beyond the common sense suggestions posted to your answer already, you can look into special synthetic engine, transmission and differential case oils. At this level of friction cheating, you're only going to gain a mile per gallon at best.If you have a roof rack or rail system on your CR-V, take them off. Changing the tires you're driving on now could also impact your milage. If you only drive on the street, get a more street friendly tire pattern. It should also be a bit lighter than the all purpose tires you're sporting for light off road use.And take comfort in the fact that most other SUVs are getting far worse milage than you are. 24 miles per gallon on the freeway is a very good figure for a vehicle of this kind.

I used to have a 2000 CR-V. Amazing vehicle. 24 mpg in real world driving is good. I had the EX model and I was getting about 22 mpg on the highway and complaining until I saw the mpg on other SUVs- including the smaller ones. You should be commended for getting that in yours. It shows that 24 can be reached. You can't really hope for much better if at all. If so, you might be able to reach 25, but 24 is impressive enough. If you have 2WD you may be able to reach 25-26- but it's a stretch.
