Default My Honda SRS light has come on, what do I do?

I have a 2001 Honda Civic four door LX vehicle. Ever since I had my car, which was bought new, my side airbag light would come on when people leaned too hard on my passenger door, and when I questioned them on it a long time ago, they said it was something all 2001 Honda's did and not to worry about it. However, the other day my SRS light came on. I look it up in the manual and noticed it had something to do with my airbag sensors. I don't want to take it to the dealership so they can charge me an arm and a leg to fix something like a fuse, so is there any other option? If my SRS light is on, is there a possibility that my airbags will randomly deploy for no reason. I know it may sound dumb, but knowing my luck that would happen to me. If I have to break down and go to the shop, do you know about how much it would cost me? Is there a way to turn it off, so I will not have to keep looking at it everytime I drive? Thanks for any information a head of time!PS: I look up recalls my model and they did not say anything about side airbag sensors or SRS lights. Plus, I have never been in an accident to where I have had my airbags deploy...

while there is no recall on this item, there is an extended warranty from Honda for 10 years/150,000 on the OPDS sensor which is the part that usually fails and causes the light to come on. Heres what Honda has to say about the extended warranty:BACKGROUNDSeveral vehicle models may have a problem with theOPDS (occupant position detection system) thatcauses the SRS indicator to stay on. Typically, one ormore of these DTCs will be set:• SRS DTC 15-1 (faulty OPDS unit or OPDS notinitialized)• SRS DTC 15-2 (faulty side airbag indicator circuit)• SRS DTC 15-3 (faulty OPDS sensor)To ensure continued reliability with the OPDS,American Honda is extending the warranty on theOPDS unit and the OPDS sensor to 10 years or150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.you will need to take the car to the dealer to have it checked to see if this is the problem that is causing the light to come on. there should not be a charge to check it if it is the condition that is covered by the extended warranty. It takes about 3 minutes to determine if the light is on for the OPDS or if it is some other cause. If it is caused by something else then the dealer will want to charge you for further diagnosis. At that point you can say 'no' if you don't want to go any further.my guess is it will be covered under the extended warrantyalso: it is not a fuse and the airbags will not go off when the light SRS light is on; whenever the SRS light is on the airbag system is disabled. Unless you have the special tool, you can't just turn the light off; even if you did, it would come back on the next time you drove the car.hope that answers your question

your car should still be under warranty. i will give you honda corporate office toll free number to help assist you with the srs which is in reference to the OPDS. that number is 1-800-999-5901. if your vehicle is under 150k they will pay the dealership 100% and nothing comes out your pocket even the diagnosis fee is free of charge. make sure you have your vehID by hand because it will be asked. i have the same problems with my 2001 honda accord lx. please note this needs to be fixed prior to passing car inspection for you the state that you live in. also the correct coding for them to pay for it will be 15 -1,2 or 3. there was a recall of this and an card should had been sent to you in the mail but either way your vehID will help get this problem solved.one more thing i have experienced is that the dealership in where i brought my car from they do not want to help me in this problem so i had the warranty approved some where else. just because you brought the car from that dealership you can get it serviced anywhere just call your extended warranty to get the approval if it still under warranty! GOOD LUCK.
