Default Upgrading a Honda Civic Ex engine?

I have a 1996 Honda Civic Ex and I'm looking for some advice on how I should go about upgrading it's engine. I'm not really an expert at this stuff but it's a stock 127 hp vtec engine. I want to buy some items that will make it more powerful without greatly hurting the gas mileage. Any ideas? ThanksI'm willing to spend around 1500 to 2000 bucks.

I have an 94 Civic EX. I just have low restriction air filtersshort air intakeexhaust headers / pipes. My car drive pretty much like stock (but better MPG), until I floor the gas and rev it high. Then this little mouse ROARS!===Don't go crazy with expensive short air intakes. The reason they work is because the factory intakes are so restrictive any cheapy short intake makes dramatic improvement. The models made specific for your car would fit easier.Don't go crazy with expensive reusable air filters. For me I rather throw out the old and replace them.Certain exhaust headers are better than others. Some are so bad that they barely fit (sometimes even blocking the exhaust ports of the cylinder). But even so I got some cheapies and they work fine.===Getting lighter mag wheels also improves the MPG and little bit of power.

What's your budget? Easiest and most bang for the buck might be installing a cold air intake. Search the internet for Civic forums and I'm sure you'll find more info than you would imagine.

If you just like to have a little more power out of your Single Cam Vtak.. go with Full exhaust catback, Headers, Cold air intake... thats basic bolts on that will give you more out of your vtec without suffering for gas milage... to continue get your good gas milage do not forget to change your fuel filter every 30K.. well hope that i help answer some of your question.. goodluck...
