It sounds like your combination swith has a bad contact. When you move it to different areas of operations you just move the circuit path so if one contact is burnt out, it could not compete the circuit and not allow the dash light to come on. Replace the switch and the problem will be more than likely be gone. The only other possibility would be faulty wiring, but unless you have tapped into the harness for anything that is very unlikely.

This sounds like a flaw in the switch itself.Take the car to a certified Honda dealer and demonstrate the problem to a mechanic. The car is old enough to warrant having the light switch replaced if you have used it on a daily basis all those years.
