Default How do you improve fuel efficiency for a 1992 Honda Civic DX?

It is currently getting about 30 mpg highway but used to run at about 35mpg.

30 is pretty good for a honda. try going easy on the gas peddle, the drivers emotion can change gas milage by as much as 30%. Try a tune up and an oil change. Get a new air filter. try higher octane fuel. many things to try. Have fun

You say "about". How are you getting at this number?====First thing is to accurately measure your MPG. To do this you start out by filling the tank FULL (extremely full). Don't stop at exactly $10, $20, etc. Full that tank until it just won't take any more fuel. Now set your tripometer to zero and go for a drive. The longer the drive the more accurate. You should do this after rush out to get better accuracy. Now note the mileage (10, 20, 30 or whatever mileage). As close to the HWY, go and fill the tank again. Again fill it to the MAX. NOW note the GALLONS. Divide MILEs by GALLONs. MPG = Mile / Gallon.===The reason you fill it the first time is to start at an "repeatable point". ===You can always try and improve your MPG by (a) getting a tune-up - new plugs, wires, distributor caps, rotors, igniting timing (b) make sure you have enough air in tires (c) most importantly drive mildly. Your driving habit probably effects your MPG more than anything else.

Try resetting the ignition timing with an electronic stobe light. Just one or two degrees too much retarded will reduce power and thus fuel economy. Try changing the spark plugs to Honda specification. Try adding 2 lbs of tire pressure to all four tires, over and above what the under hood decal says. Try using a thinner weight of engine oil, like 5W-30. If you have mechanical valves, adjust the valve lash exactly to specification. Has your car been in to any kind of service facility since you were getting better gas mileage.

First, check your tire air pressure and adjust according to what is marked on the tire sidewall. Don't forget the spare!.Get rid of any thing in the trunk you don't need. Like for instance, those sandbags you added last fall or that dead body you were supposed to dump for Sammy..If you haven't done a tune-up this might be a good time to do so.But, on your own you can do some simple stuff. You could Replace the spark plugs and air filter once a year, this will mean better economy and better performance to boot..
