Default Is this true?

My brother in law said he is going to buy some special Honda Civic that gets 55 miles per gallon. Then he says they only made it fo a couple of years in the early/mid 90's. If this car is so great, why don't they make it anymore?

Look at all the gas-guzzling SUV's out there! Mileage doesn't sell cars even though everyone is griping about the price of gas! Good for your brother-in-law for his interest in conservation of non-renewable resources!

Does he have a special friend named Jack? I'd bet he and Mr. Daniels have been spending too much time together.

I doubt it that any Civic would have made that milage in the 90's even the Civic Hybrid doesnt make it as that only does 47-50mpg. Most Honda Civics get into the 32mpg range and max out at 40 excluding the hybrids. As you said if that Honda did exist im almost certain they would still make it as it would be a good competitor for they Toyota Prius which does 55-59mpg.

The car is not a Civic. It's called the Honda Insight. It gets about 60 mpg highway and 50 mpg city. They quit making them in 2006 due to the release of the CIvic Hybrid.

I dont know about 55 MPG, but the Honda Civic Del Sol according to the EPA for model year 1994 with M/T did get 34 city/41 highway.Could that be what your brother in law was talking about?

The car he is talking about is most likely the Honda Civic FE as in Fuel Economy. It was introduced in 1982 and got 41 mpg in the city and 55 miles per gallon on the highway. So your brother in law is correct. They probably stopped production because the FE had little to no features. Things like A/C, power functions and an automatic trans were not on this model. Later on, the '84-87 CRX got 51 mpg in the city and 67 on the highway! The next CRX also got a similar 56 mpg and that is the one made from '88-91. Keep in mind the fact that all these cars only produced 50 to 75 horsepower so they weren't the quickest cars. It was probably a tough sell to get that extra economy when a normal Civic had the features and still was better on gas than the average car

I think he might be referring to the Honda Civic HX, a model with a CVT trans and (I think) a more fuel efficient engine. Not exactly 55 MPG, but you could get around 45 if you're light on the gas pedal.
