my best friend just bought a 2001 volkswagen vr6 last night and my 99 prelude is now challenged for the crown of fastest car among our friends. I want to make my car faster without adding exhaust because i hate the loud drone of an exhaust system. what can i do to do the engine naturally (no turbo) that will increase hp and make my car fly by his gti like hes standing still? I guess another side question to this question is whats the best way to start/launch my car in first gear? vtec kicks in around 5200 but tires spin so its tough to get a good start and he smokes me everytime cause he has traction control. any help is appreciated. thanks!

you're aware you can do exhaust without making it sound like a lawn mower right?quite simply if you don't want to do a turbo you're going to need to do exhaust, but not just exhaust, you'll want to do intake as well, and possibly headers depending on how much extra UMPH! you need.Look around for some cat back exhaust systems that don't have the giant gaping hole at the end lol

Hate to tell you this, but against that VR6, you don't have much of a chance. On the top end as well, that car will do easily, 140-145MPHMost exhaust systems actually REDUCE hp, since the back-pressure is not optimized, so that's smart to avoid that faux-pau. That GTi NEEDS TC, because it's go so much torque. Yo simply may just need a different car(but that route is not smart)Face it, there will always be someone who has a faster car, makes more money, a better looking girlfriend, so stay in school, and eventually by something like a 911, and OWN the road.

You might also need to invest in some new rubber. Better tires may help give you the grip you need. A cold air intake may help you get a few horses...perhaps chipping it would too, but they are more dramatic on turbo engines. Still, worth looking into-there must be a ton of options for prelude online.

Race him from a roll. You could find an exhuast thats quite but yet add some hp. Intake exhaust will help but not much a pair of cams will let you rev higher and getting your ecu re-flash from Hondata lets you tune giving you more HP. But then you have to convert from OBD2-1. Or you could get the basic Intake Header Exhaust pretty simple to do in your drvieway and dosent cost and arm and a leg. And a zex Nitrous kit 55 shot you should have enough power to kill him, so cheap or want to make it seem like your fast hide the kit and keep your car stock looking. Also get some Drag Radials you need the traction

this would honestly prolly be one of the closest matches....for this non-turbo rally....kick it up with new rubber tires for better traction at the starting line.....cold air intake instead of short ram air b/c it provides about 8-15 more HP.....racing chip would be solid.....and for exhaust ill def prefer the XS exhaust EVO 2 especially for this Vtec.Other than these minor mods....i'd def save up some cash for a turbo first and go all out on that prelude of yours....so fastt, and that things cathces all the ladies

first off everyone is acting like the vr6 is a freaking beast on the road. I have driven one and I have driven a modified civic that was just as fast without a turbo. If it was the new 06 vr6 you would have no hope but the 01 you coul definatly get him. Look the prelude engine you have is an h22 and its pretty good once you open it up. All you need is a good cold air intake(look into injen), a performance exaust system that is dyno proveen to increase horsepower beccause not all of them will, and a good pair of headers(dc has good ones). Also a high flow cat would help. I garuantee you dont need more than that to beat if not keep up with him. You can also try getting a racing chip but if you do that change some of the internals of your engine(like racing cams or pistons). That stuff will cause serious bucks though. You can also get a plug n play or one with a v-tec controller so you can set when you want the v-tec to kick in. My friend had a b18c engine that was a mere 190 hp and he ordered some JDM parts did some work to the engine and turned it into a naturally aspired 400hp monster. No turbo. So you dont always need a turbo to make your engine fast.

get some bigger cams and if you can get an engine management system to tweek you power at each rpm. with the racing issue start off normal and then punch it. less wheel spin and a better reation by the guy your about to beat when you eat his ass alive. trust if his car is faster tell him to take traction control off and see whos faster then.. let me know how it turns out.....
