what kind of car? year? the engine will still turn if the timing belt is broken. it's the camshaft that stops turning... if you think it might be the timing belt (i.e. you are overdue on replacing it and itmight be likely to fail) take the oil cap off and see if you can see the cam turn if there's not a baffle in the way. otherwise try taking off the plastic top cam cover (depending on what kind of car we're talking about) other than that, check for fuel and spark and see what 's missing...
