It is my understanding that all current production Honda Civics are equipped with VTEC motors. The DX, LX & EX models are single overhead cam (SOHC) versions, whereas the Civic Si is equipped with a double overhead cam (DOHC) version. DOHC, having separate intake & exhaust camshafts, affords better flow through the motor along with the ability to individually optomize the profile of operation of both the intake & exhaust valves' lift duration & timing. This feature provides for in part, the additional horsepower the Si model delivers over the SOHC Civic models.BTW, certain earlier generation Civics were equipped with VTEC only on their EX & Si versions (mid-90s thru ~ 2001, I believe). And Civics made prior to the early 1990's did not have VTEC at all. VTEC made its debut in '92 on Honda's Acura NSX.

In the US market 92-95 Civic EX and Si models were the first to come stock with the D16Z6 VTEC engine. The VX model came with the D15Z1 VTEC-E96-2000 Civics:HX model came with the D16Y5 VTEC-E engineEX came with D16Y8 VTECSi came with the B16A2 VTECAll other models came with the nonVTEC D16Y701-2005 Civics
X and LX came with non-VTEC D17A1Civic HX, D17A6 VTEC-EEX had the D17A2 VTEC-ESi had the K20A3 which uses a VTEC-E cam set up.2006-present all come with a form of VTEC engine. Good luck.

But! It should also be made clear that the Vtec-E versions are for ECONOMY, so this is according to what you are looking for. I would not even waste my money on an early model Vtec-E as well. Too many problems have been seen out of the VX's and HX's.
