Default Why does my 3/8" drill bit "chatter" as it begins to cut.?
This happens when the drill bit is in my drill press. As it starts to cut it chatters and vibrates. Thanks.

The chuck is probably running out, that is, not running true, or wobbling.

It can be a case of incorrect speed for the drill and material, also try a little oil or cutting fluid, even though the drill bit is a cutting tool it helps with a bit of lubrication

Is the drill bit bent. If not, try drilling a smaller pilot hole.

The drill is sharpened at too flat of an angle. Sharpen it more pointed in the front.
