I have a 2001 Honda Civic 4D, if that matters. I have noticed that it makes a strange noise every now and then, but of course when I take it to the mechanic to hear the noise it never sounds. I really don't know how to describe the noise...maybe..a type of whistle, but it is short and not high noise...almost like a low short sounded quick whistle. Yeah, call me crazy, but my friends have heard it, too. It maily happens during the time I am at a standstill or right when I press on the on the gas to go, which made me think it was maybe my brakes, but I really don't know. It probably has been going on for a year or two, but it seems to only come in the spring and summer, which made me think it was the air conditioner. Any input would be helpful. I just want to make sure it isn't anything serious. Like I said, I took it to the mechanic but the noise never came. Thanks ahead of time!My air conditioner works fine...

Check your fan belts, if that's not it, check your significant other, might be them.....

look if it comes and goes replace your belt and tensioner that the first thing i would do first but if your a/c dont work its your compressor

Sounds like a drive belt, have them inspected and tighten to factory specifications.worn brakes, especialy the front disc pads make a similier sound, but will get worse or loader, it to is easy to check.P.S. Brakes stop vehicle motion and not what you descibe
