Default Can Honda Automatic Transmission Fluid only be used?

I took my CRV to the dealer today and the "Service Consultant" indicated that the only transmission oil to be use with the car would be Honda -only- I smile and I thought I would do the research. Any comments?

Yes, all manufacturers are going to their own specific trans oils in their vehicles. Toyota and Mitsubishi have been doing it for the past 6-7 years.

Yes, in a pinch you can use Dexron III, but only if you have a severe leak and you're trying to get it to the dealership. An alternative would be to buy the Honda fluid off eBay and take it to a mechanic to have them service it.BUT, in my opinion, the transmission is one of the things I would want the dealership to work on, especially considering the relatively small amount more they charge.

Its just marketing. Honda does make quality trans. fluid though. For the small price increase, you wont be losing out. Plus, supposedly, their fluid is made ideally for Hondas.
