I live in an area where there is a high amount of break ins. I wanted to know if it is worth upgrading the stock alarm in the Honda I just bought. Maybe even Lojack?where do you get etchings?

i definatly recomend lojack. if they dont recover it within 24 hours i believe they refund you the cost of the lojack even if they do find the car after the 24 hour period.an alarm wouldnt hurt, i would get it if you keep anything at all of value in the car.

The Security system on a 2007 Honda Civic has a builtin antitheft system that disables the starter. Unfortunately, these are easily diabled by professional car these. Most cars are stolen by professionals. If you put a tracking device like LoJack in your car it will increase the likely hood of your vehicle returning from 60%-90%.You need to make sure you know which tracking device to buy. these systems are regional and not national. LoJack covers the Eastern US. It is a very effective systemYou may also want to consider getting window etching. Window etching is a serial number that is etched on each of your windows to deter people from stealing your car. If a vehicle is stolen, the thief will usualy park it on a side street or parking lot for a few days to ensure that the vehicle does not have a tracking device in it. They do not want to bring that vehicle back to their chop shop or base of operations because it would lead the police to them. They usually park it so you can not easily see the tags (why packed sidestreets are often used). The only other way to identify a vehicle is the vin under the windshield. Police won't walk up to look their because it is not practical on their patrols. An etched serial number on all the windows is easily visible from the patrol car.The important thing is crooks no about this. If they see it, they skip your car. To resell the car they would have to replace all the glass. If they are going to chop it, they loose the value of the glass (very valuable for resale). Has about an 85% recovery rate within 3 daysI like LoJack alot but etch better. Crooks not only steal your car but anything you left inside like insurance, registration and bills all of which can help them steal your identity and credit history. LoJack RECOVERS your car. Window Etching deters them from stealing it the first place. Most other alarms are easily bypassed (including Onstar) so don't waste your money on those.

The Built in anti theft is very effective and is not that easily disabled without disabling the fuel pump as well so even if they get past it they won't get very far without fuel. The Honda installed alarm/security system is a better deterrent as warning decals are placed on the windows to alert thieves that the system is in place.. Make sure that you are careful with having anything visible that would attract unwanted interest in your vehicle.Lo-Jack is a great system but I have been told they seem to install the system in the same place on every car it is also simple to disable if the thief is a pro. I would ask about this if you are considering this route.Lets face it if someone really wants your car there is nothing you can do to stop them. You need to be cautious and make sure you have adequate coverage on your insurance. If you did not put a large down payment on the car when you bought it you might want to talk to your insurance company about a GAP rider to protect you from any shortage between what you owe and the depreciation that a new car takes in the first year.
