Default Anyone done a mild to moderate performance upgrade on a '96 Civic?

I have a 1996 Honda Civic DX Hatch with a 1.6L 106HP stock engine and stock 5-speed tranny. The current power plant is approaching 200,000 miles. I want a little more get-up-'n-go from this puppy without sacrificing the kids' college tuition. Any ideas from cold intake and cat-back exhaust to port jobs to a Civic HX/EX engine swap from the wrecking yard? Please note complicating factors in your suggestions (custom half-shafts, wiring & ECU issues, emissions issues, etc.). We do NOT live in California, but we are smog tested. The car has A/C, but NO Power Steering.

an intake/header/exhaust setup will maybe get you 10-15 hp. if you were to do a swap, i would get a b16 sir II. check out complete swaps at www.hmotorsonline.com if thats too much look into a d16z6 or a mini me setup

Well I have a 96 civic lx with 157,000 miles, it has the same motor as yours. I have put on a cold air intake with a k&n filter, a 4-2-1 header with a full 2 1/2 exhaust with a turbo muffler(not a coffee can muffler). I upgraded the coil and plug wires from summit racing. This has givin me alot more pep and my gas mileage has not changed. Best of all these items are not very expencive, this is my daily driver so I have have been running this car like this for five years and it still run great. These are all easy to install, you will need a muffler shop for the exhaust though.Good luck!
