Default Why do I have trouble starting my 1985 Honda civic?

It will stay running once it is warmed up, yet I have to rev it up for a few minutes before it will run/idle on it's own. I'm turning it into a race car for a compact car division at the local race track. The person I bought it from told us that it sat for three years or more. It sounds like water in the tank, but I've already put dry gas in it. Does it need carburatuer cleaner? New plug wires? What can I do to help it start better?

You may need a fuel cleaner. It sounds as though it may be running to rich/lean. I would check your fuel/air ratio.

sounds like it could be the carb or maybe the choke sticking, try some carb cleaner first....

Sounds like the idle control valve may have dried out. That solenoid would automatically adjust the idle from fast to slow once a car warms up.

It sounds like it might be running too lean when cold. Check the fuel flow - you might need larger injectors, or a higher pressure fuel pump. Or maybe the mass airflow sensor needs to be recalibrated. The problem with computerized engine management is that when you change an engine part (especially when making a race car), you usually need to change the electronics, too.

Let's face it it is time for a new more up to date car..I do know that Honda's can run forever though.Run a tank of high test gas through it and check your spark plugs.I have seen honda's go over 500,000 kilometers . Maybe take it in for a check up.Also the most important things about owning a car is the oil change.Good Luck I hope you get her going.
