D! D3 and D4 are lower gears for driving up hills or if you think you have something to prove and want to race. The D is actually your overdrive gear and will get you the best performance and fuel economy

In my opinion, D3 is used for stop and go traffic. D4 is for normal city driving. Regular D is for highways.

Wait a minute: aren't the available 4-speed automatic transmission settings D D3 2 1? At least on my old Civics and my current Odyssey they do.Most people set the shifter at D to go through the progression to 4th gear and pick up the lock-up clutch off 4th when they're going at highway speeds. D3 goes through the progression and tops out at 3rd gear, and requires you to rev at higher RPMs to shift compared to D. 2 goes to 2nd gear only, 1 to 1st gear only.

D is what you want to drive in unless you are going up a pretty steep hill or are in like snow, then you would drop it down to D3 or D4.
