I've had that problem with my 90 accord also, but at the time it had 360,000 miles on it. It is a speed sensor gear.

Sounds like a dry bearing in the speedometer where the cable attaches to the meter. If it makes noise especially when it is cold this could be your problem.

Ask your trusted mechanic to check for the cable. It might have been loose.

Hi there !That is a very common problem to Honda's.I have seen what you are describing many , many times. The speedometer will work erratic or not at all while the odometer keeps on going, both will not work or they will stick. The speedometer is run electrically.(i do not mean digital!)The main Integrated Chip on the speedometers circuit board has gone bad. This causes erratic or no operation of the speedometer/odometer.There is no way to repair the problem. You must get a new or used speedometer. My local pick n pull junkyard will sell me a speedometer for $20.00 for that vehicle in San Jose California.(the dealership wants $180.00 brand new.)If i set the mileage on the used speedometer and removed and installed on your vehicle ; i would charge you $120.00 for that vehicle. it would take me about 90 minutes to do the job.I hope that helps. Good Luck!

I have this same problem on my 1990 civic (only when very cold).Although the tachometer is run electrically (via the ignition coil signal), I believe that the speedo is run on a mechanical cable from tranny final drive to dash. You have a stripped gear or bad bearing. One of these years I will get around to fixing mine too. Until then, a GPS works well!

It's called a speed generator, it sits on the top of the transmission near the firewall. You just descibed the text book definition of a bad speed gen. They run about 180.
