a new engine same size/manufacturer as the one you have in there would help if you said what kind of a car it is....whats a 1997 EX...does the car have a name or manufacturer.

I'm going to assume we are talking about a Civic here. Your 1997 EX has the most potent of the D-series engine family from the factory, so there really isn't any direct drop in option here. I know that is a bit disappointing, but nobody ever accused the D-series of being real screamers. Your best bet would be to fork over the bucks for a B, H, F, or K series engine. All these motors offer far greater performance. While some cost quite a bit of money (H22, B18, K20), other's are more affordable (B16, F22). Hasport offers plenty of swap mounts for your Civic. I think the best bang for the buck idea would be the B16. It's cheap, readily available, and easily swaps into your car, plus it makes way more power than your D16 does. Your butt dyno will certainly appreciate it. It has unimaginable aftermarket support too, so there is no shortage of parts for it either. Hope this helps!

The B16 or B18 will require the least amount of parts. You will need the motor, tranny, motor mounts, Ecu from a b series motor, Some good recommendations are the P2t 99-00 civic si, p30, or p28. also you will need axles. With you putting the B series in you can just get axles for the 99-00 civic SI. I put a b series in my 99 civic ex. You can also use you factory engine harness off the d series too, you will have to change the crank position sensor, the oil pump and knock sensor. thats only if the motor is the OBD 1. If you can get the OBD2 engine it will save a little bit of money in converting it. If you can swap it yourself it will cost around $2500. If you need a shop add about $1000-$1500.
