I drive a 95 ford explorer and mine did that for a while and my mechanic replaced a small motor that controls the idle which I believe was called an IAK motor or somethin like that. It stopped for a while but now it does it again so I don't know if that was actually the problem. Hope that helps.

one of two things: a vacuum leak. check all the rubber hoses for cracks or if any came off. run your hands over them to see if u can feel any cracks or air being sucked in or pushed out. second thing it coudl be would be your air idle control valve. this can be an expensive part. if you do find out that it is the problem, it can on occasion be clogged and u can clean it out with some carb cleaner. if it is shot, then u might try a junk yard or ebay for a used one as a new one may be $200. good luck.

That's called "honda syndrome" . It's really nothing worth fixing most hondas just do it with age. But if it does get too serious your engine could be missing.

Hey there. I have a 99 Civic hatch.. turboed, and mine does it. Try cleaning out your idle control valve. Its really easy to do. I Yahoo serched to get good directions on how to do it.. its simple. Just make sure.. do not remove your radiator cap when you have the thing off.. you'll get anti freeze all over the place! ///Bran

If it does this on idle only when the motor is cold it is the idle air control valve. This is a surging type idle. Again (only when the motor is not up to operating temperature).Otherwise a vacuum leak is a good second choice; but these only have an increased idle (above 800 rpm) No surge.KC

Okay, older hondas have an idle control and a butterfly valve that controls the idle. What is probably goin on is that you idle control is set at the factory setting. After so long of running the engine, the spring that is between the screw and the block that make up the idle control screw is getting worn. So the engine is revving up to compensate. you can try revving you engine up a couple of time to get your RPMs to drop. if that doesn't work try adjusting that screw. if neither of those things work. go to walmart and buy some fuel injector cleaner. it is in a bottle that mixes with your gas and will also help you with gas mileage and will keep your engine from bogging down.
