if the car runs the vtec is working - the vtec is the type of motor - should idle around 700rpms

the v tech comes in at about 5500 rpm,you will feel the car accelerate real hard, after several trys if the v tech is not working it should set a check engine light, check the oil if it is low the v tech will not come on and it will set a v tech code

does the check engine light come on? if not Vtec is working. If the system is supposed to come on and does not the oil pressure senson will notice no change and turn on the MIL and limit the RPMS to the 3,500 range

It's difficult to tell when VTEC engages. However, audibly, it's easier to tell if car is equipped w. aftermarket induction/headers/exhaust. Also, cars with oil pressure gauges will show slight pressure drop @ VTEC engagement since the system uses the engine's oil system to actuate the switchover to the high-lift cams..
