Unless the car has been abused it shouldn't be the bearingsI assume you've already checked the oil level and checked for oil leaks. If it is a bearing it won't get better with temperatureI would suggest you open the hood before starting the car when its cold, then start the car and listen for where the noise is coming from. Is the noise more up front than in the center of the car? Is the noise louder at the top than the bottom? is the noise on the right side, left side or center? If you belive it to be a bearing, you can usually short out the cylinder to isolate the noise. If you start the engine and have the noise, remove the spark plug lead from the #1 cylinder and listen for the noise to greatly diminish or go away. If it doesn't, put the plug wire on and try cylinder #2, then 3 and 4. If the noise doesn't go away or get noicably lower in volume, the problem is not with a bearing. It is not unusual for the heat shields for the catalytic converter on these cars to break welds and knock when cold. It is also not unusual for the inside honeycomb of the catalytic converter to break apart and knock inside the converter housing. If I had to guess without hearing the noise, I'd bet more on the converter or the heat shield than I would an engine bearing.hope that helps.

Balls, a bearing will get louder as the engine heats up, you wouldn't get 100 kms before the bearing ceased up.sounds like a sticky lifter or gudgeon, use only manufacturers recommended oil and it will probably improve the problem.too many people throw in cheap oil, not realising that this can lead to problems.

When the car is cold all the oil is drained to the sump. When u start up the oil takes time to completely lubricate all the moving parts. If you use poor quality oil this is more pronounced. Try and use a high quality oil. It will reduce the knocking noise but not eliminate it completely.
