Both systems use the same general idea for their hybrid systems. The gas engine runs the car and when you brake, the friction energy is used to power a generator that is used to make the electric engine run the car. Honda had the first hybrid vehicle in the world, so they have a longer experience, but Toyota has more hybrid vehicles. They're both good.

Toyota had the worlds first production hybrid vehicle, the prius, in 1997 followed 2 years later by the honda insight in 1999.Both manufacturers use similar concepts so it comes down to what you prefer style/brand wise.
