I replaced the VTM-4 fluid about 10 days ago. The Pilot has 20,000 miles. Now the check engine light came on and my wife thinks the VTM-4 light came on as well while driving but it's not on now (but the check engine light is still on). I want to read the code for the check engine light but can't figure out how. I have the service manual but couldn't find the procedure anywhere (it's not under check, engine or light in the index).

Well it should be an OBD-II system so if you have a checker auto parts store in your area a lot of times they will scan it for free. Or look up, on the internet, OBD-II pronounced OBD2 codes and I believe field test is the procedure name.

it might have actully happend at 20k miles because is time for your 20k maintenance! take it in! nothing should be wrong.. just needs to have all its bolts tightened and checked out !but as for if there is an erroru got obd-II so that means u cant do it alone, you have to goto a dealer and get it checked out! or goto a autozone or local car place, they usually do free error code readings to hopefully sell u parts..

You need an OBD-II Code Reader/Scanner. It connects to a port on the left side of the dash, right above where your knee goes. You can get a decent one for $99.99 or less at a parts store or at Wal-Mart. Universal code listings are provided. Brand-specific codes can be found on the internet. You can also use a reader/scanner to erase a code from memory and to read the stored codes.

First of all, almost every condition that can cause the MIL to illuminate is covered under the 3 year/50000 mile emissions warranty from Honda. the only exceptions are if you left the gas cap off or loose or if there is damage such as a mouse eating through the wiring harness.secondly, I've seen several Pilots that have the VTM-4 light and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (check engine light) come on for an engine misfire. the misfire reduces the engine power and 'tricks' the pcm into thinking the vehicle is in traction control mode which similarly cuts out cylinders to restore traction. that's why the VTM-4 light comes on. I don't remember if it is the EGR valve or the IAC valve that caused it. Regardless, your Honda dealer should take care of it for free.If you want to know what the code is without buying a code checker or generic scan tool, you can stop by an AAMCO transmission shop as they advertise a free diagnosis. Your honda dealer will probably tell you there's a charge for diagnosis if the repair is not covered under warranty to cover their time. Again, unless you left the gas cap off or a mouse built a nest in the engine compartment, the repairs should be under the 3 year/50000 mile emissions warranty regardless of where you bought the Pilot or if you are a second owner. The warranty is on the vehicle, not the owner. hope that helps
