Default Can I use an automatic transmission fluid for power steering of a honda car.?

I bought a second hand 1995 Honda civic car and my friend told me that I can use an ATF to top-up the power steering fluid. Is it true?

Yes, transmission fluid will work fine. They're both hydraulic fluid. Now in Diesel mechanics, some semis use 15w/40 for power steering fluid. Most of the time an owners manual willtell you not to because they happen to have a special fluidto sell you. But it is cheaper to use ATF.

There is different kinds of automatic transmission fluids. You must know which one to use before you put it in your car. There use to be only 2 different kinds, but now I don't know how many there are. I use to be an auto parts manager, but that was some time ago. Haven't kept up with things. Check with an auto parts store and they will be able to tell you which one to use on your particular car.

there are different types of fluid but the main thing is what your manual says, most a.t.f and p.a.s fluids are the same but check the back of the bottle most brands contain dexron and if your manual tells you to use fluid containing dexron then you can use either a.t.f or p.a.s fluid

Do not use ATF. This car requires genuine Honda Power Steering Fluid. The use of ATF will damage the system.I have taken this information directly from a 1985 Honda Civic owners manual. You will be able to buy the fluid from Honda.
