...air filter out.? Is this true? When I got the car the filter was out, but I do have it. Also, if I need to put it back in, I just take the cover off, set the filter in its place and "squish" it down with the cover, right?

Cars are made with a spot for the air filter for a reason. It filters out dust and particles which could get into the engine. All you have to do is replace it regularly. It lasts a long enough time unless you drive constantly and for long distances or through dusty areas. You should learn to inspect it and maintain your car.Take a look at the website below.

Not exactly true. You need that air filter to protect your engine's internal parts from abrasive dust. There are some hi-flow filters out there that will increase the amount of air flow and help you get a couple of extra horsepower. It won't make a noticeable difference. Just make sure the filter gets changed every 60,000 miles or whatever your service manual recommends. As for the second part, I'm not familiar with that particular model, but on most cars, you put the filter in place, put the cover on, and close the clips around the edges. You shouldn't have to do much "squishing"Whoever told you that, don't listen to his car advice anymore.

the air filter is very important to protect your engine from dirt and dust thats why it is put there in the first place, now if you were told to leave it out to me this would mean that the engine has a lot of miles on it and is using oil as well as petrol so leaving out the filter will let more air in to the engine and stop it from using more oil, for a while anyway. it might be a good idea to have your engine checked out by some one in the know ok.
