Default Honda Prelude using a lot of Oil?

My 1998 Prelude uses oil. it always has. At first it was just a quart or so in-between oil changes. Now everytime I fill up gas, I have to add a quart. Is there any product that actually works and helps slow oil consumption? I really dont want to do a ring-job at 140KThanksPS I have already switched from 5W30 to 10W30. Aslo here lately, I have started to smell a little oil odor (like a drip on the exhaust type of thing after oil changes) If it is a leak aswell any sugestions on where to look?It does have, as always a film of oil or something on the back of my car, so that is why I feel that it is burning oil.The car's interior and exterior are in great condition, but at 140K I begin to ponder how much $ I should invest in the car. It has been flawless so far and I have had it since 32K.

A quart of oil per fillup is NOT a "slow" consumption.Plus, if the exhaust is not smoking, you're losing it from a leak. Just park the car for a couple of days and look underneath to see where it's coming from. Also, try taking it to the shop. That's what they're there for!

Synthetic oil also work wonders on oil leaks, if they are small enough. As said above, if 'no smoking' then it is a leak and you should fix it as it is a Very nasty pollutant that gets washed off of the roadway and into any streams and/or rivers to poison the fishes et al.One drop of oil pollutes One MILLION drops of water!

It sounds like you probably do need new rings. I would check your cam seal since preludes are known to blow quite a bit of oil out the side of the motor if the cam seal is bad. Also check your oil filter, it is located directly above your exhaust so it there is a leak from the filter it will drip onto your exhaust making a terrible smell.

Everything above stated has been relevant. Also look into adding a supplament or an oil treatment. Lucas and others makes them. They are expensive but will help temporarily.Konrad
