...light came up This happened only for 1-2 times in the morning when I was idling, after that there was no problem with idling/running the car. The car seems to running fine but the "check engine" light is still ON. I took the car to the mechanic and the code was found to be P0505 related to idling system. But I dont have any problems with the car and am perplexed whether I should take the car to the mechanic(80$/hr) or do some checks myself, if possible. Please suggest what can be done on my own to check what might be wrong especially since the car doesnt seem to have any problems. Can someone help?

Since you already paid a mechanic and had it scanned did he at least tell you what he thinks is the problem? The check engine light is on because one of the sensors that communicates with the computer is not functioning. Most likely the air flow meter or air temperature sensor, needed for cold start ups so that the computer can adjust the air/fuel mixture to run smooth while cold. When car is warm all is fine, cold it needs a richer mixture. The mechanic should have at least given you an idea of what is required.

I owned an '01 Civic EX for some time before my dad took it over. He needed the good gas mileage. I had problems similar to that where nothing would be wrong with the car, but the check engine light would come on. I started changing the oil every 3000 miles and checked the plugs on the intake electrical components. If the light was still on after I did both of these things, I would simply disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a couple minutes before re-connected it to reset the computer. It always worked for me. Hope this can help you.

Take it your Honda dealer. They the proper diagnostic instrumentation to hook to your on board computer. The check engine light is stored as a fault and they'll know instantly the reason the light's on. Don't waist time guessing what's going on as hundreds of possible of faults may be stored there.
