The engine is d16y8. The engine does not say Vtec on it. The guy selling the car say it is a vtec....Could it be a vtec and not say it? Is there anyway to find out?

if its a vtech it would sayit on the valve cover...but u can also look at the back of the head by the intake u will see a lump i guess u would call it its the vech sol...i know not a good description but ask the guy to show u the v tech selinoid...if he cannot then its not vtec

it would say but he could have replaced the part that would tell you get the vin and look it up it should tell you Engine: 1.6L I-4 EFI VTEC SOHC on a carfax report

The 96-200 civic's did not say vtec on any of the valve covers, except maybe the Si. From what i recall, the only ones that did have vtec were the EX and Si models.

honda stopped putting vtec on the valve cover in 96 i think i know they did but they started doing it again

If the engine really is the d16y8 then it is v-tec. Unless it is a swap, the trim should be Ex.
