All engines have some sort of exhaust system, so I'm not sure what you're asking. If your quesion is who invented the muffler, it actually predates the automobile by a century. The first mufflers were designed to control the noise of stationary engines used in mines and factories. Exhaust gases were piped to an underground vault, then piped to a chimney. The ratio of the chamber's volume to the diameter of the piping determined the effectiveness of the muffler. By the time the automobile came around, it was already known that the expansion chamber could be a metal can, rather than an underground vault. It was also understood that forcing the exhaust gas through perforated tubing would attenuate high frequency sound. So the muffler was probably part of automotive design from the beginning.
