I own two Civics, and neither is modified. They are great cars, for the use Honda designed them. You're right, a lot of people hate on Civics. I've thought about the reasons why, and here are my conclusions. The cars are very cheap to purchase and modify, which is all the rage today. They are very easy to work on, repair, and original and aftermarket parts are abundant. So teenagers with more desire than brains buy the cars, do stupid modifications (huge wings, big scoops, ridiculously huge, obnoxiously loud exhaust tailpipes, stickers everywhere, crappy paint jobs, on and on...), and then behave and drive obnoxiously, attracting the wrong kind of attention. I hate those idiots, as I would like to modify my Civics, but don't want to be lumped in the same category. So my cars remain stock. And the per liter displacement (specific output) is a good but useless parameter. Honda fans should forget about that, as most people only care about gross output. Specific output only impresses efficiency engineers.

Because the American muscle people have something to prove, by bashing other they feel better about themselves. I'm not a fan of the civics, mostly because the people who choose to drive them in my area are complete morons and give bad rep to the import scene.

It has happened so often that teenagers have done minor engine mods like short ram intake, put a body kit, spoiler and a blast pak on it and have driven them like idiots. I don't hate civics, but I won't buy one just because of the image it would give me because of these *ss holes that do this. Then again I used to drive like that when I first got my liscense, but I was driving a Mazda 323 hatchback (heck ya!) it was a 4-speed manual.Oh and I have no preference between domestic or import, but Mercedes is for OLD PEOPLE!!

High rev engines are relatively smaller but more powerful and definitely lighter. Some engines have better performance say on a liter per liter basis because of a better technology or design which the manufacturer used or developed from the others. Honda has this that is probably why they have the edge...

They usually hate because they see a few rice boys with 17 second civics with huge wings and coffee can exhausts, and think every civic out there is like that. I own an 11 second daily driven EG Civic Hatchback, so they can be fast and for less then 10 grand invested.

Some people "hate" on them because they prefer low-end torque response. The current Honda's, especially with the K series engines have no problem with low-end torque however. The other reason, is likely what the person talking about wings and spoilers said. There is a subculture of wanna-be racers that sprang out of the true import tuning scene and gives some Honda enthusiasts a bad name. These are the guys with bone stock Civics with 104 hp and a loud exhaust who rev up on you at stop lights as if they were driving a sports car.Incidentally, Honda technically does not have the highest horsepower per liter. Mazda does. The Mazda RX-8 makes more horsepower per liter than even the S2000 does. The Honda does have the most among piston engines though. It's also worth noting that horsepower per liter, while impressive, isn't what wins races or what determines overall performance. You can have 150 hp per liter in your 2 liter, but if the person next to you has 400 hp out of their 5 liter and a car that weighs about the same I don't think they are going to care as they watch you disappearing in their rear-view mirror. LOLDriving skill and performance metrics are what matter. Horsepower per liter is only interesting to engineers.

Mostly because most Civic Si drivers are mouthy little punks who drive like jerks on the road. Sorry, but it gives a bad image to the car. I drive a turbo vehicle, and have had little Civic drivers tell me that Vtec is superior to turbos. Stupid things like that make all Civic Si drivers look dumb.
