that all depends on your driving style. if you race from one light to another and have to slam on the brakes at the last minute the will not last as long as if you slow down before the light and if you have a clutch you can down shift to save your brakes

. north American cars have build in obsolescence . I used to own a jimmy it needed new pads every six months. the dealer said your brakes are fine you just need pads once in a while. Then i had a ford taurus it was better but not by much. The rear discbrake gave me tons of trouble ,about 30 000 k was the limit for pads front and back. Now i have a toyota camry with 100 000 k on the clock and no sign of trouble on the pads.

Some cars have four wheel disc brakes, others have only two wheel discs. Brake pads are not used in cars with drum brakes. It depends on the driver how long brake pads will last. A gentle driver can expect at least 25,000 miles on a set of front brakes. A vigorous driver may only get 15,000 miles. There are many types of brake pads; OEM, sport, heavy duty, and racing. The harder you drive, the faster the brake pads will wear out. We normally change brake pads when they have 33% of pad thickness remaining. Front disc brakes usually need pad replacement twice as often as rear pads. Rear engine cars, like Porsche and old VWs, will need rear pads about the same time as front pads. Regular brake inspections are a good practice, on all four wheels, whether disc or drum.

Depends on your driving and also if you have ABS or not. My first car didn't have abs, i abused the crap out of it and one time i only got 10,000 miles out of the breaks. My new car is more sedate, i dont drive nearly as hard and it has ABS, i expect my breaks to last well into the 30k. Someone i know has no need for new brakes on her car and she has had it for over 50k.
