I think you answered your own question. They did it to sell cars. Hyundai did what most car manufacurers do when they want to compete successfully in a particular class. They took the top selling model in that class and benchmarked it. Basically Hyundai most likely bought a bunch of Accords and literally took them apart, studied how they were built, measured specifications and dimensions and they used that information as the basis for the design of the new Sonata and made sure to include lots of Accord styling cues for good measure. This practice is very common in the car industry and especially in Japanese and Korean companies which often blatantly imitate each others designs and ideas back and forth, it's much more obvious when you look at the whole range of JDM cars that we don't even see in this country. Hyundai isn't the only one guilty of this. Chevy Avalanche owners could just as easily be pissed because Honda imitated the Avalanche design for their Ridgeline pickup. It's a very common occurance in the car world. Just look around.

What about Audi?If you look at the designs of cars when the newly redesigned Sonata came out, it looked like an Audi A4 up front and an Accord in the back.Of course that doesn't matter anymore, the year after the Sonata hit the streets, Honda redesigned the rear end of the Accord and now the two don't look anything alike.Hyundai is trying to sell cars and the rear end on the Sonata is attractive on that body. It's a good car and priced very competitively for the features included on it.Try not to lose too much sleep over this one ... well unless your last name is 'Honda' - and if that's the case - go sue Hyundai for stealing your design

I think Hyundai is buying the design from Honda. I remember when new civics come out, new elantras come out. When new Accords come out, new Sontas come out too. I mean when an all-new model come out. I think all of Hyundai's models are the same as Honda's except the Genesis and maybe some other other ones, but the SUV's and Vans look the same too... I've been researching, but so far found none if this is true.
