I'd say that Toyota has a higher build quality than Honda. As for Mercedes being better than Lexus, they always have been, but these new Lexus LS's are giving the S Class a run for their money like no other car ever has.

this is tough... it depends what you want. for trucks and suvs i say toyota is better because they have a better selection and have been making them forever. small cars i think honda takes it - the new civics are awesome and the fit is pretty sweet for a subcompact. for a regular sedan i think the accord and the camery are pretty well matched in room and luxury, but the accord may have the edge on performance. larger sedans- toyota, the avalon is such a nice car. for straight performance - of the current models - honda as in the s2k since toyota has stopped importing most of its performance models. but in past years toyota had some of the greatest sports cars ever made if not the best with the celica gts, mr2, and most importantly the supra. mechanically - they are both amazing. if all cars ran like these 2 do, there would be a lot of out of work mechanics out there. quality above and beyond with these two. gm, chrysler and the germans could learn a lot - ford has learned its lesson and lets mazda do their work for them.

When you mean good..what are you looking for-looks, reliability, gas mileage. I like both companies as being reputably good cars (and having previously owned a Toyota Tercel), with decent-good gas mileage depending upon individual models. I'd have no regret in buying a car from either of these brands but I think you'll find that in general the Hondas are more expensive than comparable Toyotas models due to the more stylish looks of the Hondas. My Toyota was inexpensive (first car) and VERY reliable but if I could of afforded a more expensive car I would of chosen a Honda.

Oh yeah, Honda is much better than Toyota and thier not falling apart like Toyota is. Last year Toyota had the most recalls, but the media "failed" to notice since millions would stand against them because of thier reputation. These days reputation is nothing, technology advances so fast it cant keep up. For ex: three years ago GM was one of the worst companies, now they have the most top-rated vehicles, and the quality/reliability surpasses Toyota. Honda is still on top of the reliability ratings. Ford also had more recalls than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined, for reasons like exploding engines and wheels falling off. Here is a quote from the Washington Posts review of the Toyota CAmry "one of which is the Chevrolet Malibu, which in my real-world driving experience has been every bit as good and reliable as the much-ballyhooed Camry but has been maligned primarily because it is a Chevrolet". Oddly enough that was an '04 Malibu VS the totally redisigned '07 Camry. Common problems with Toyotas are plastic rattling until it falls off. People then complain that when they take it to the dealer to be fixed they just say "The cars are made with so much plastic its practically impossible to fix" GM is also the worlds fastest growing manufacturer, and that dosent happen by accident.

Speaking as someone who has lived in Germany first off...Mercedes quality has tanked since the merge with Chrysler. If you're gonna spend that much money on a car get a BMW. It'll last longer and run stronger. In response to the recall thing...Toyota and Honda have more because they take responsibility for their errors and actually get the problem fixed. Companies like GM try to act like the problems with their cars don't exist until the issue becomes life-threatening. Only then does GM recall, and only because the government makes them, or someone is killed and they're sued. As for the main question, its a matter of experience and opinion I think. More people like Toyota merely because there are more Toyotas out there, it is the larger company. I think personally it depends on the car itself. When it comes to the small car lineup, Honda has had the edge since the mid-90s, but Toyota has always had the superior trucks. I speak honestly because I have plenty of experience with both companies, I've owned two Toyota vehicles, an MR2 and a Tacoma Prerunner, and two Honda vehicles, both Civics. My first Civic I bought in 1995 for $15,000 new, and did nothing but the standard maintinence (No dealer maint, did my own work), it never had a single issue. The car travelled the world, spending time in California, England, Germany, and Hawaii, and yet was still running strong when I sold it in 2003 for $4500. I can't say the same for my MR2, which I've had to swap out the engine, though I'll admit I push that car much harder since its my track car. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I think both companies have excellent quality ratings and will last a long time if taken care of properly.
