Yes. That is in the 1970s (or 1980s?)when Honda used their turbocharged engines in F3(or F1?could'nt recall) racing. Till the rules have changed & turbocharging was banned in F1 & F3. That is the time when Honda came out with VTEC to maximise power gains on their NA engines. To my knowledge, Honda did not produce any turbocharged engines on their production cars. It was because in the early 90s, VTEC was proved to be very successful in their EG series of Civics in terms of capacity to power output ratio of a NA engine. So they decided to use VTEC as their trademark.2ndly Honda also believes that turbocharging is not really a proof of engineering exellence because turbocharging is a matter of boost pressure. That's why you see alot of aftermarket turbo upgrade kits. It's a game producing the highest boost pressure without blowing up the cylinder head gasket & cracking the engine block.

^^ Just to let you know, even if Honda was banned from using turbos in the 70's or 80's, VTEC had never been put in a Honda car of that era. VTEC was first introduced in 1993 on the H22 Prelude.
