Golf's are too common these days. The new ones don't even look like Golf's, you can't tell the difference between a Golf and a Polo anymore. And what's the point in buying an expensive car, if it looks like the cheaper version?!

I would go for a Honda Civic, you can't beat japanese reliabilty, better resale value and looks nicer imo. The Type R also goes faster than most Mercs, BMW M3's in fact most german cars as they are restricted to 155mph. I was told that the new Type R will be the same price as the old one, about £17000, I would hold off till january and purchase one of those.

you know both VW and Honda are great cars!It depends on which model you were thinking of buying. The Honda Civic Type R is an excellent car. A bit revvy but goes like stink when you need it too. The VW is a heavier car but if you were going for a GTI or R32 then you might have to ponder a bit harder as these two models are proabably faster. Honda bare in mind do have the VTEc which makes it quite economical around town! There are equal numbers of tuners out there who can help you out if need. but inherently Honda reliability is second to none. While VW seem to always scrimp on the smallest things and end up with huge bills!I've had both a Type R and R32 and I personally who go for the Honda each time!. Remember that saying if it doesn't work then its just a metal box on wheels!Good luck!

I have always been a big German car fan but in buying my first car here in the U.S. I made a surprising choice of choosing the '06 Honda Civic over all other competitors in its class (VW Golf incuded). I like the quality of materials used in the interior of the Civic as well as the company's ergonomic approach to interior space. The engine is delightfully peppy and very frugal on gas. I opted for the LX model and got all the essental equipment I need for my daily commute to work and fun drives on weekends. Styling is a bit techno-modern for some people's taste but it suits me just fine. Overall, I'm impressed with the new generation Hondas. The Civic is definitely a keeper.
