the elements are great cars, but they are only 4 seaters due to the rear seats folding up and out of the way. This means that you can't center the baby in the rear seats, the baby seat would have to be on one side or the other. The clam shell doors make getting in and out of the back seats of the element very easy. Also, the rear seats are pushed back farther than normal small SUV's so there is plenty of leg room back there, just not much trunk/storage space.

I'm actually thinking of getting one myself. My son's due on the second week of December and I'm narrowing my choices down to three mini-SUVs at this point: Honda Element, Honda CR-V, and the Toyota FJ Cruiser. I only like the Toyota coz of its rugged styling, 4runner platform, and bullet-proof quality. The element is actually a very flexible car-based SUV considering its interior dimensions and Honda's penchant for fuel economy though you want to consider the 2007 CR-V too coz, well, it's new and may offer more creative solutions for your ergonomic concerns.
