Default 2005 Honda Element 4WD Questions?

Can you turn OFF the 4wd and put into 2WD?

No, it is AWD. there is no way to disconnect the front drive from the rear. It doesn't have a true transfercase where front and rear drives are engaged. It is simple a center differential which splits the torque to front and back. This is bad for mileage, it also doens't have a center diff lock, so it will not get as good of traction as a true 4x4. It works great for wet or icy roads though.

The Element is AWD, not 4WD, so it's on all of the time.

I believe that you can switch it from awd to 2wd like they used on the old civic 4wd. there is a switch on the transmission to disengage the rear wheels in case the car needs to be towed. CHeck under your hood for a sticker that tells you how to do it.
