OOH, fun. This could stem from numerous places. Ill start from the most simple to the most difficult fixes. OK, first start by changing your air filter or at least checking it. Hold it up to the light and look at it. It you still get the error check the O2 sensor or rather replace it. It you continue to get the error i might suspect that your catalytic converter is clogged and then i would just take it to the shop and have them hook it up to the computer to see exactly whats wrong. There is no sense in changing the cat if its working fine. However, if you recently had a "(weedeater, referring to sound not name)" exhaust put on i would suspect a interference with back pressure because today many newer car rely on the back pressure created by the cat and is often removed when putting a new exhaust on, even thought it is illegal.

Check engine light is emmissions related and could be a loose gas cap, faulty oxygen sensor, clogged cat. converter. Usually the culprit is the gas cap hasn't been put on right. Check the cap make sure it's threaded on right. If that is it, the computer will reset itself after a couple of starts and the light should go out by its self. If the light doesn't go out and the car is running fine you can let it go for a bit. If it starts sputtering and the fuel economy goes down it needs to be scanned and the codes have to be read by a technician.
