Rpm means revolutions per minute. that means how many times per minute your engine cycles. most cars idle at between 600 and 850 rpm (depending on motor size) Rpm doesn't "do" anything. it is just a measurement term.I Hope that is what you meant.

rpm= rats per mice..what this means is there are a certain amount of rats and mice that make up this so called "engine" the rats and the mice dont get along and the rats chase the mice inside of the "engine" if the rpm says 2,000 then that means there are 2000 rats chasing 1 mouse, unless u have more than one mouse inside, if u had 5 mice, then there are 10,000 rats chasing them. the other gauge u see that looks like a lamp, that's the mouse's water, if that goes down, u need to put more water in the engine for the mice, or else they will all die and ur car breaks down...

RPM is a meaurement of rotational speed it stands for revolutions per second in an engine it is used to indicate engine speed when an engine is at 2000 rpm the crankshaft of the engine completes 2000 rotations per minuteI like the rats per mice explanation that guy's the next larry the cable guy or bill engvall

the RPM is a meter that registers how fast your distributor is working to spinning the rotor inside the cap.when you turn on your car, the RPM is low..like 1000 RPM..that is how fast the rotor is spinning inside the cap..1000 revolutions per minute.you step on the gas and it goes up..this is also related to your timing chain..it tells when your gears are moving either up or down.the higher the RPM, the higher the gear you will be in..if you drive a 5 speed, the RPM will tell you when you need to shift into a higher gear..in an automatic, it will do that for you without notice.in a 5 speed transmission, the RPM will tell you to shift higher, if you are at 3000-4000 RPM on the gauge, you will have to shift to 2nd gear or else you will choke out and damage your car.there are RPM shifter lights you can install on your car to tell you when you need to shift if you don't know.the RPM is more important than a speedometer in most cars..
